cDNG and KRW2.0 removed

Kinefinity has announced that the RAW codecs will be removed from its cinema cameras. As stated on the Kinefinity Instagram page: “Starting from March 1st, 2021, Kinefinity removes cDNG codec from MAVO LF, MAVO 6K and TERRA 4K on the current camera line, also drops the planned KRW2.0 codec, for the well-known reason in the industry”. The rumor on the streets indicates that this reason is the patent owned by RED Digital Cinema regarding compressed onboard RAW video recording.

Kinefinity MAVO Edge: No ProRes RAW

Furthermore, one of the strongest features of the anticipated flagship MAVO Edge 8K, which is the ability to shoot ProRes RAW, will not be implemented on the initial release.  As described by Kinefinity: “Also the upcoming MAVO Edge 8K will not implement ProRes RAW at first”. The release of the Edge has been delayed in order to minimize and eliminate any hardware issues. The company stated that there has been major progress in the camera’s development recently and it is confident to see the first units of Edge shipped to end-users (in the west) in early 2021. Kinefinity adds that: “We will run the exciting MAVO Edge 8K and other important products in mass production ASAP”.

Sharpen the ProRes capabilities

According to the company, it will continue to focus on the optimization of Apple ProRes, especially the ProRes444/XQ on the current and future product line. Kinefinity adds:” Certainly, almost all Kinefinity users choose the Apple ProRes as intermediate codec when filmmaking because Kinefinity has been optimizing debayer algorithm to much better image quality over initial data. At the same time, Apple ProRes footage can be edited much more smoothly than RAW data in a post workflow. The full dynamic range of footage is preserved by the built-in KineLOG3 curve and Apple ProRes. Especially ProRes444 provides maximum room for grading work, bringing natural color, pleasing skin tone, stunning details in an organic and delicate way”.

Stay tuned as we’ll keep you posted on the progress of the MAVO Edge and its ProRes RAW capabilities.
